Jose Mourinho has told Manchester United that he would prefer to sign Cristiano Ronaldo ahead of any other striker, according to reports.
The 32-year-old has informed Real Madrid that he wants to leave this summer and has instructed Jorge Mendes to find him a new club.
The Sunday Times claims that United are exploring the possibility of a deal for their former player but crucially, the pursuit will get the green light from Mourinho.
Madrid are trying to get Ronaldo to reverse his decision and will only sell if the forward makes it clear that he will not change his mind.
United have already been in talks with Madrid this week to sign Alvaro Morata, but they have been unable to agree a fee with the Spanish champions.
United have had a £52.4m bid for the striker rejected and Madrid have told Mourinho’s side that they will hold out for €90 million (£79m) transfer fee as they are not desperate to sell.
It’s understood that Morata has agreed to join United and has been in contact with Mourinho about moving to Old Trafford.
Alvaro Morata has reportedly agreed to join United this summer.
Ronaldo, meanwhile, wants to leave Madrid after becoming angered by the charges brought against him by Spanish prosecutors this week.
Ronaldo, who denies the claims, has been accused of evading €14.7 million (£13m) in tax.
The Portugal international’s representatives have also informed clubs that the player’s desire to quit Madrid is also due to wanting a ‘fresh challenge’.
Ronaldo’s camp have also made it known that Madrid would accept a world record bid of €150m (£131m).
Paris Saint-Germain are ready to rival United, while Ronaldo has also received an offer from China, although he has no inclination to join a team in the Far East.
