Alvaro Morata sends message to Antoine Griezmann to remain at Atletico Madrid and ignore Man Utd offer
Alvaro Morata has urged Antoine Griezmann to stay on at Atletico Madrid amid speculation the forward is in talks to leave the club.
Atletico’s elimination from the Champions League following their dramatic 3-2 aggregate defeat to Juventus intensified rumours of Griezmann’s possible departure in the summer transfer window.
Manchester United have long been linked with Griezmann and the 27-year-old forward was on the verge of a move to Old Trafford in 2017 before Atleti’s transfer ban convinced him to commit to a new deal in the Spanish capital.
According to Sport, United are once again favourites to sign Griezmann – along with Bayern Munich – but Morata is hopeful the Frenchman will turn down a move abroad.
‘It does not worry me; we have been very f***ed up by what happened last week, but I see Antoine happy here,’ Morata said ahead of Spain’s Euro 2020 qualifying matches against Norway and Malta.
‘I sincerely think so [Griezmann is happy at Atletico]; he is at home, he is our most important player, our flag player. ‘The rest of the squad and the fans want him to stay with us.
Another player rumoured to be on his way out of Atletico is Saul Niguez, but Morata brushed off rumours that the midfielder is set for a switch to Manchester City.
The Chelsea loanee said: ‘The market is like that; every window the best are players are linked to the best clubs and Saul is one of the best in his position and he is very young.
‘Almost everyone would want to have him and it’s lucky that we have him. ‘We hope he stays because I have a lot of appreciation for him and we really need him.’
