The Champions League quarter-finalists are set and Michael Owen is convinced an English team will win the competition this season.
No side other than Real Madrid and Barcelona has won Europe’s premier tournament since the 2012/13 season, with Madrid winning four titles in the past five years.
However, they won’t add a record 14th crown this season after surprisingly falling to Ajax, although Barcelona remain in the hunt to extend Spain’s dominant record in the competition. Things look good from a British perspective.
Four of the eight sides are from these shores, with Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur all in the hat for Friday’s draw.
Ajax, Porto, Barcelona and Juventus are the teams standing in the way of an English triumph but former Liverpool and Manchester United attacker Owen thinks one of the Premier League sides will prevail. And he’s tipping domestic title contenders Manchester City and Liverpool as the sides to beat.
‘I said at the start I though it was an English year,’ he told BT Sport. ‘Liverpool and Manchester City are the favourites. ‘They’re slightly ahead of everyone else at the moment.’
