Wayne Rooney thinks Jadon Sancho should stay at Borussia Dortmund to play regularly rather than move to the Premier League to sit on the bench.
Sancho, 19, burst onto the scene last season, scoring 12 goals and 14 assists and is one of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s major transfer targets.
United will not move for Sancho until next year after Dortmund’s insistence the forward was not for sale this summer, but Red Devils legend Rooney thinks Sancho has to prioritise his playing time.
‘Dortmund is a great club with great fans, they trust their young players and you can see that in Sancho and the progress he has made in the last 12 months,’ he told German publication Bild.
‘Now Jadon has to ask himself whether he would get the playing time he gets in Dortmund when he moves to England, or would he just sit on the bench?
‘Playing time is so important for a young player like Jadon, so if he gets the most playing time in Dortmund, he should stay there.’ Sancho signed a new long-term contract with Dortmund last November that runs through until the summer of 2022.
Dortmund made it clear in April they would not entertain offers for Sancho, despite United’s willingness to spend upwards of £90million on the youngster. ‘No, we did not receive anything [an offer],’ Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc said.
‘We do not expect anything and we do not want anything, because he is on our plans. ‘He will play for Borussia Dortmund next season. Nobody needs to get in touch.’
