“we thought the title race was over after Newcastle defeat but now we’re back on track” – Bernardo Silva

Bernardo Silva admits Manchester City thought the Premier League title race was over after defeat to Newcastle United.

Liverpool had the chance to go seven points clear at the top of the table after City’s shock loss to Newcastle, but instead the Reds drew their next two games and saw their lead cut to three points.

City then moved to the top of the league table on Wednesday night thanks to a 2-0 victory over Everton.

Liverpool can return to the summit at the weekend and now have a game in hand over City, but Silva revealed he and his teammates believed the defeat to Newcastle had lost them the title.

‘A few days ago, we thought we had lost the Premier League,’ Silva explained. ‘Now we are top of the league, even if it because we have played one game more.

That is the most important thing for now. ‘After Newcastle, it was very tough on us. We were very disappointed, more than anyone else. ‘The players, the staff – we were all very sad because we all thought we had lost the league in that game.

‘Fortunately, Liverpool drew against Leicester and that gave us a little bit of hope. ‘Then there was another draw against West Ham and that means the race is on. ‘Mentally, it is a big boost for us. We will try to keep doing our job and don’t relax as we did against Newcastle.’
